In a sensational summer transfer twist, Newcastle United captain Bruno Guimarães has officially informed the club’s hierarchy of his desire to leave St James’ Park, with Arsenal leading the chase for his signature.

Following Brazil's devastating World Cup elimination by Norway, the 28-year-old midfielder has returned with his mind firmly made up regarding his future. According to breaking reports from David Ornstein of The Athletic and Football.London, Guimarães has communicated his wish to move on, plunging Newcastle's summer into further chaos.

The midfield maestro is understood to be increasingly frustrated by the current direction of the Tyneside project. Newcastle have already suffered a massive summer exodus, losing Anthony Gordon to Barcelona and Sandro Tonali to Tottenham Hotspur. With the squad depleted, Guimarães has set his sights on a move to North London to join Mikel Arteta's project.

The Premier League champions have been long-term admirers of the Brazilian international and are now ready to rapidly accelerate their pursuit.

Arsenal sporting director Andrea Berta previously tested the waters in late June with a verbal package valued at just under £60 million, which Newcastle swiftly knocked back. However, armed with the knowledge that the player is actively trying to force the move, the Gunners are preparing a structured follow-up offer worth up to £60 million (€70 million) to break the deadlock.

The Magpies remain incredibly reluctant to sell their star man even after his explosive admission, largely because they are under no pressure to raise quick cash. Newcastle have completely cleared their financial hurdles and profit and sustainability worries after selling Sandro Tonali to rivals Tottenham for a staggering £100 million fee. Because Guimarães' old £100 million release clause expired back in June 2024, Newcastle still hold all the cards and are fiercely fighting to keep their captain at St James' Park. 

Despite Newcastle's firm resistance, the player’s formal request has completely changed the landscape of the deal. Arsenal now hold the crucial psychological advantage. While negotiating with the Newcastle boardroom will make this transfer a very hard deal to pull off, it remains entirely do-able before the summer window slams shut.
